Wash Your Heart, Not Just Your Face!
God is not deceived by a polished appearance.
Let’s be honest: external maintenance is good, but your soul needs attention too.
“Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.” — Matthew 23:26 (KJV)
Let’s be honest: some of us can spend 30 minutes getting ready for church but struggle to spend 5 minutes examining our hearts.
The face is glowing. The outfit is matching. The perfume is announcing our arrival before we arrive. Even the Bible is under the arm!
But what is happening inside?
Examining What Lies Within
Is there bitterness we refuse to release? Envy we disguise as concern? Pride we call confidence? Dishonesty we justify because “everybody does it”?
The face is glowing, but the heart is holding a grudge from 2019!
In Matthew 23, Jesus confronted the Pharisees because they paid attention to outward cleanliness while neglecting the condition of their hearts.
The problem was not that they washed the outside. The problem was that they ignored the inside.
And that is still a danger today.
What True Sanctification Means
Sanctification is not merely changing your clothes, hairstyle, friends or church denomination. It involves allowing God to cleanse your heart, renew your mind and transform your character.
You can change your appearance without changing your attitude. You can change your environment without changing your desires. You can even change your church without changing your heart!
The real question is not only, “Do I look like a Christian?” but “Is Christ changing the way I live?”
- Before you check your mirror today, check your heart.
- Before you condemn someone else’s behaviour, examine your own.
- Before you ask God to change the people around you, invite Him to work on you.
Reflection
If God were to examine your private thoughts, conversations and motives today, would they reflect the holiness you profess publicly?
Prayer
Father, create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Expose whatever is displeasing to You, give me the grace to repent sincerely, and help me live a life that honours You both in public and in private. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
This Week’s Challenge
Identify one attitude, habit or hidden motive that needs to change. Bring it honestly before God, take a practical step towards change, and stop making excuses for what He is asking you to surrender.
Remember: Wash your face daily, wash your clothes regularly, but never neglect the cleansing of your heart.
